AI got good.
Good enough that people started using it for real things: learning, writing, coding, research, planning, support, analysis, creativity, work. Getting there took extraordinary work: the research, the models, the chips, the infrastructure, the products, the interfaces, the APIs, the open-source projects, the deployments, and the taste to make something powerful feel usable. The people who brought AI into everyday life moved the world forward. We believe the world is better because of what they built, and we were among the people changed by it.
We used ChatGPT and Claude. We ran local models on GPUs, Macs, and whatever hardware we could get our hands on. We tried Ollama, llama.cpp, hosted providers, open-source interfaces, private setups, broken demos, and tools that were clearly early but obviously important.
Every setup had tradeoffs. Hosted tools were effortless and powerful. Local models gave us different kinds of control. Open-source interfaces moved fast. Private deployments made sense for sensitive work. Offline systems mattered when a network could not be assumed.
Those tradeoffs shaped what we believe: people should have the freedom to choose, and to choose differently later. ChatGPT, Claude, Ollama, llama.cpp, another open-source interface, Open WebUI, a private model, a hosted provider, an offline system, or several at once. Memory or no memory. Tools or no tools. Files or no files. Shared knowledge or private data. A persistent workspace, or one conversation that disappears when it ends.
There are many ways to give people that choice. Open WebUI is our answer.
It is a home for AI: a place to bring models, documents, tools, memories, permissions, automations, and shared knowledge together under boundaries you choose.
It can be personal or shared. Local or hosted. Online or offline. Small enough for one person at a desk, or large enough for a classroom, lab, clinic, company, community, or field team.
A home has doors. In Open WebUI, those doors are practical: files, tools, memory, users, permissions, network access, retention, automation. Set one way, they let a student learn with what they have or a small team build with serious tools. Set another way, they let a clinic protect patient trust, a community keep knowledge close, or a field team keep working when the network is gone.
That same idea scales. A doctor's AI can read only the charts it is allowed to read and catch a dangerous drug interaction before the prescription is signed. A teacher's AI can know the class it serves and prepare tomorrow's lesson. A disaster coordinator's AI can run on a laptop with no internet and still use local supply manifests and damage reports. An engineer's AI on Mars can diagnose a failing CO2 scrubber without waiting on a cloud twenty-two light-minutes away.
We believe the more important the context, the more important that choice becomes: where it lives, who can use it, and how much freedom people have to change their minds.
Our mission is to help every person and organization build a home for AI on their own terms: on Earth, and everywhere beyond it.
